Apart from the actual competitions, yes - especially on the way up when it's not just a matter of trying to better your position but to hold onto what you have. On a lighter note - even at or close to the top and during performances it is not unknown for singers to try to 'out do' each other. Holding onto a note longer or even trying to drown-out each other. Opera singing is VERY personal.
