England's ships were sailing almost all seas bringing back riches, revenue, prosperity and plunder. She had become a great colonial power and the Englanders almost all wished this to continue for ever. Jobless could find jobs abroad and residents lived in spledour and luxury- the ripe atmosphere for splendid carefree poetry. The country had enough political turmoil and turbulence in the midst of all this prosperity which only broke the stillness in social life and stimulated poetry. Poets could be afforded and paid well and their wayward opinions could not be noticed and taken care of in the middle of a thousand other things usually associated with administering to a vast colonial empire. Printing and publishing of books had become a thriving business as more and more countries were brought to English tongue. Incessant and unbroken travels abroad opened the eyes of the Islanders and brought that century's Glasnost and Peristroika to English Literature. One can see the resultant effect of all these activities in Alfred Lord Tennyson. He was the summary of Victorian Poetry. He even opposed the liberation of India.
