The title character-not a speaking part, was played by the renowned violinist Isaac Stern in the beginning of the film, this is a trick question- who played the title character? also the film(and I guess the play) got into some muddled water, the persecution of the Jews in czarist Russia, for one, hardly a comedic angle. The Jewish angle was wound into the film like wire on an armature- two traditionally taboo topics, religion and politics likewise, (one can argue the same in part with Sound Of Music, where Religion (Catholicism) and politics- Nazi in this case were components of the plot. Also both shows tended to show law enforcement personnel in a negative light. Politics and religion don"t ,mix, and this show is one of many that attempts this witches Brew. I saw S O M as a kid in Williamsport, PA and was thoroughly turned off. Imagine Daddy Cleaver recalled to a Hazardous duty tour-minimum 24 months- that"s not comedy, that"s wartime separation angst- it can work in songs like walking in the Rain,or concerto for lovers, but not on stage. it did have a cogent and non-violent in execution- Anti-War sentiment, that much was good.
