Surtitles are the text or libretto of theatre productions, commonly Opera productions, that display the language of the work in audience-centric terms. These may be language translations or simply explanations of difficult-to-understand passages of singing.
Surtitles also help hearing-impared patrons understand the work.
When surtitles are presented, they can appear above the proscenium, or on displays installed in the the backs of the seats.
