A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansbury, takes place in a small, battered apartment in an all-black neighborhood in Chicago. The apartment the Younger family- the protagonists- live in is "won over by weariness" and "would be comfortable and well-ordered if it were not for a number of indesctructable contradictions to this state of being." The Youngers, especially Ruth, are desperate to move from their shoddy and over-stuffed apartment to a real house, but a variety of factors limit their ability to do so. Thusly, the living conditions are, indeed, livable, but not enjoyable. The Youngers mostly just survive in their home, cramped, overwhelmed, and down-trodden, their dreams quashed in reality.
