Theoretically speaking, any coastal settlement in Australia, including Sydney and the Opera House, could be subject to the force of a tsunami. In 2007, a tsunami warning was issued for the eastern coast of Australia following an earthquake in the volcanic region of the Solomon Islands, but by the time it reached Australia, its highest wave was 15 centimetres. For more details of possible tsunami risks to Sydney and Australia, see the link below.
People went to look for their loved ones, searching through the debris and bodies with bare hands. Cranes and heavy equipment was brought to the area, to help clear the remains of peoples houses and vegetation. Information and organisations were put in place, as was a national support scheme. Organised tents were put up to help the homeless (nearly 30,000 in North West India). Emergency services were hard to organise though because of conflicts between armed rebel forces and their national governments. There was so much international aid needed that overall, £7 billion pounds was spent on helping the people who survived this devastating event. By Becky Easter
