The only thing granted to Shakespeare personally from the Crown was his coat of arms, and he received that in the reign of Queen Elizabeth. Early in the reign of King James, Shakespeare was one of a group of men to receive a Charter from the King entitling them to be a playing company under the patronage of the King. This Charter was issued to "Lawrence Fletcher, William Shakespeare, Richard Burbage, Augustine Phillips, John Heminges, Henry Condell, William Sly, Robert Armin, Richard Cowley and their associates."
