The age of discovery, the age of reconnaissance, was also a great age of classical scholarship. This is probably not a coincidence: colonization is one of the leading themes in ancient history, and figures prominently in literary texts like the Aeneid. The colonization of Italy, as narrated in the second half of Virgil's poem, has been characterized as "the founding legend of Western civilization." But there were other models, as well. In particular, there was the ancient colony at Carthage, Virgil's description of which, in the Aeneid, provided Shakespeare, in The Tempest, with a setting, a situation, and some of his characters.
Shakespeare wrote more than thirty plays, many of which are considered among the best in the history of the theater. He wrote over a hundred and fifty sonnets, among the best in the English language. He owned a part-interest in an acting company and two prominent playhouses. He held a lease on a suite of rooms in the same building as the Blackfriars playhouse, and bought the second biggest house in his hometown of Stratford-Upon-Avon. His plays are revived and have been in almost constant production since they were written. His works are translated into most known languages, and is studied by English, literature, drama, and theater classes worldwide.
People mostly find out about Shakespeare's plays when they are in school, but as often as not, they do not really get an appreciation for them there. Many people who got nothing from their English class in school find later in life that Shakespeare's plays are actually pretty cool and interesting by watching a good production or film.
Before Shakespeare became a staple of school curricula, people had to discover the plays by going to see them. Actors and theatre people have, of course, always known about them--they have been continuously performed since acting was made legal again in 1660.
Shakespeare was born in the same year as Galileo, and many of Galileo's discoveries, including the discovery of the moons of Jupiter, the phases of Venus and the topography of the moon were made in Shakespeare's lifetime. Other astronomers also made important discoveries, especially Sizzi's discoveries of the motion of sunspots, and Kepler's discovery of a supernova in 1604.
Galileo also made the first practical telescopes. Other inventions in Shakespeare's lifetime were the newspaper (1604) in Germany and the Mercator projection map (1569).
The first European to reach Australia (1605) did so in Shakespeare's lifetime.
