From our point of view, everything is clearer in hindsight, if you pardon the vision reference. But the point is that Oedipus could NOT have figured it out. It is the efforts of people to thwart the prophecies of the Oracles that bring about their inevitability. If Oedipus' parents could have completely ignored the Oracle, then maybe things would not have unfolded as they did. But their every action after hearing the Oracle would have been on some level motivated or influenced by the prophecy and their utter revulsion towards it. Would it have been possible for them to NEVER do a thing with the inner hope or conviction that this act will render the prophecy false?
