In 1596, when Shakespeare was living in Bishopsgate, his son Hamnet Shakespeare died. Hamnet was 11, and some historians suspect he died of the plague although others point out that there was no plague outbreak in Stratford at the time. There was, however a plague outbreak in London at the time, which is why the Lord Chamberlain's Men were on tour in Kent at the time Hamnet died. This may be the cause of the confusion.

We don't know. This is one of Shakespeare's "lost years" when we have no idea whatsoever what he was up to.

What tragedy happened to Shakespeare when he was writing Romeo and Juliet?

Shakespeare's son Hamnet died at the age of 11 in 1596 but most scholars think Shakespeare had already written Romeo and Juliet by that time, probably one or two years earlier. The first published version of the play came out only a few months after Hamnet's death and was presumably performed a number of times before being published, making 1596 unlikely as the year it was written.
