Shakespeare's son Hamnet died at the age of 11 in 1596 but most scholars think Shakespeare had already written Romeo and Juliet by that time, probably one or two years earlier. The first published version of the play came out only a few months after Hamnet's death and was presumably performed a number of times before being published, making 1596 unlikely as the year it was written.

Hamnet, William Shakespeare's son, died in August of 1596, one or two years after he wrote the play Romeo and Juliet. There weren't a lot of tragic events in Shakespeare's life that we know of: Hamnet's death in 1596, John Shakespeare's death in 1600 and Judith's troubled marriage are the only ones.

As far as we know, none. Shakespeare had very few personal tragedies in his life, such as the death of his son in 1596 and of his father in 1599, and they didn't happen at the time he was writing Romeo and Juliet.

Why did shakespeare decide to kill Romeo and Juliet?

It's a style of writing called 'tragedy.' Something that is generally unacceptable and "tragic" for the readers. Romeo and Juliet's being a Tragedy is what made it controversial and interesting enough because of an ending we do not want to happen to ourselves. If shakespeare made a different ending, we may not be talking about it now.
