i think that he was asking for a date with you discreetly..... It's not quite a date. If you're both "interested" he's trying to avoid the stress of asking you out and still give you the opportunity to meet in person. It's more than a phone call, less than a date and it can also be considered a way to do business without going to the office, in case neither of you is actually interested in the other, depending on the situation. Going for coffee can be considered to be just a good way to meet in neutral territory. It's not a bad thing.
