Martha Graham was an American choreographer and dancer. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania in 1894, of Irish ancestry, she studied at the Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, where she became enamored of the dance art, also, she was inspired by her father, who was a doctor that was interested in treatments that used physical movement to treat nervous disorders.

I'm not a dancer, but I believe she was most known for her modern dance techniques. There may have been others before her , but ,earlier in the 20th century, almost all dance that was performed on stage was Ballet. This kind of dance she and her dance company performed was like ballet, choreographed in the same manner, but was a more abstract, free kind of dance. And the performers did not necessarily wear tutus, or stand "on Point" (like ballet dancers, on their toes). The costumes were often just tights, leotard, and simple ballet slippers. So everything was less formal , more personal, and about feeling, moods and not neccesarily related to a story(as ballet usually is). It was considered "Modern" dance so I'm guessing she might be considered the founder of modern dance.

She was an American dancer/choreographer who danced/choreographed for over 70 years. She was the first dancer to ever perform at The White House. She hated to term "modern" and made it known as "contemporary." She opened the Martha Graham Dance Company which is the oldest dance company in America.
