Claudio is planning to call off the wedding because he has been tricked by Don-John into thinking that Hero is cheating on him. Claudio gets really angry and upset. In Shakesperean times; a female child was extreamly valuable because if you married her off to a wealthy and influential man - then you would get some of the money and power. So when Claudio sees Hero...er...cheating on him; the Horror isn't just in the fact that she cheated on him, it is also a disgrace to her's, her father's and especially Claudio's name.

But the irony is in the fact that she is getting ready for the wedding when her husband-to-be is planning to leave her at the alter and embarrass her, and everything ends in tears....

What is so ironic about the closing of Act III in much ado?

In Act III of "Much Ado About Nothing," Claudio publicly shames and rejects Hero at their wedding based on a false accusation of infidelity. The irony lies in the fact that earlier in the play, Claudio had sworn his love for Hero and praised her virtues, only to hastily believe the accusations against her without seeking the truth first.
