Shakespeare wrote both plays (which he intended that people should watch, in his theatre, after paying him and his partners money) and poems (which he intended that people should read, after paying money for the book). Although the plays are more famous than the poetry, many of them were not printed in book form until after his death. Even then, they were not always printed as separate plays. The book "Mr. William Shakespeare's Comedies Histories & Tragedies", better known as the First Folio, and printed in 1623, is probably the most famous edition of the plays, separately or as a group.

As for the poetry, which unlike the plays Shakespeare intended should be presented in book form, Venus and Adonis was his most famous work during his lifetime. Since then, his Sonnets, which have usually been published as a group, have become more famous.
