The tongan dance is known as the tau'olunga it can only be performed by a girl who is a virgin. Tongans test this by putting tongan oil on her skin and if it does not shine the way it should she is advised to not perform the dance sparing embarrassment not only to the family but to herself. It can be performed at weddings but is mostly left for a girl to perform on her 21st. This shows not only her virginity, but her transition into womanhood.
Sōkē, originally known as Eke, is a Tongan group dance performed with sticks, which the performers hit against each other to the beat of a drum.

The Tongan Tau'olunga originated from Samoa.Samoan dance: "Taualuga" (pronounced, Tow-uh-loong-uh) literally translates into "Finale" or "Last dance to top it off." But the Taualuga is actually the last part that men put on a house or a "Fale" (pronounced fah-leh). So you can see the symbolism there.Anyways, I was talking to my aunty (She being Tongan...and honest) and she said in ancient times when Tongan Kings would visit Samoa, the Samoan Kings/Chiefs' daughters would come out to perform a dance for their guests (which was the Taualuga). The Tongan Kings adored it and thought it was one of the most beautiful dances throughout Polynesia. Hence, they adapted it to their culture calling it "Tau'olunga" which is very similar to "Taualuga."Now I don't even think the word "Tau'olunga" means anything but it is merely a word. I ask Tongan people what it means and some say it doesn't really mean anything....it's just the name of the dance. But that's also one reason why Ithink it originated from Samoa because the Samoan Taualuga has a meaning to it and the Tongan Tau'olunga does not.
