The author's point of view is his/her tone. Which can be found by examining the use of literary devices such as diction and syntax. Which of the following sentences says that I do not like dogs.
1)The dog was getting into the garbage.
2)That mangy mutt stuck it's big nose into the garbage for the last time.
Obviously, the second one says that I probably don't like dogs. This is because of the diction I used. It created a sort of contemptuous tone towards dogs, that would be my point of view. Tone can be much more subtle however. Which of these sentences says that I enjoy listening to the sound of the wind.
1) It was a cool autumn day and the wind blew; it blew softly and resiliently. I stopped for a moment and my ears piqued, but then wind disappeared.
2) The joyous day was interrupted. I had never felt such an uncomfortable heat. The only comfort I found was in the wind, embracing me in it's cool arms.
While this is not a difficult question, it must be read carefully. The wind was favorable in both circumstances. However, it was only in the first that the wind created a sound that the author likely enjoyed hearing. This is apparent because of the "piquing ears."
These examples are very simple. Tone becomes much more complex, especially in formal writing where bias is frowned upon.
