I think,Shakespeare's Macbeth is an icon of vaulting ambition and excessive greed of an individual. It thus transcends the historical character. It is a drama that we are familiar and identify with in many corporate boardrooms of today and more recently in wall street.
Macbeth of Scotland ,fought for a legitimate cause as the usual principle of successor in Scotland required that the crown passes on to a collateral of the king(Malcolm the second) rather than to his direct heir(Duncan).Macbeth of Scotland thus has a `local habitation and a name'

Scotland won the battle after Norway attacked shortly after another army lead by McDonald of Ireland had been defeated. Then, weary as Macbeth's army was, they defeated the Norwegians. So Scotland 1, Norway 0
Macbeth takes them more seriously than Banquo. There is nothing Banquo could do anyway to make his children become kings without him becoming a king himself. But Banquo, despite his lighthearted reaction to the witches, does not forget them. In Act II Scene 1 he says to Macbeth, "I dreamt last night of the three weird sisters. To you they have shown some truth." So perhaps there is not such a difference between their reactions after all.The difference between the witches' predictions for Macbeth and those for Banquo are that the ones for Macbeth are being fulfilled even as they speak, whereas Banquo's will not happen in his lifetime. There is no incentive for Banquo to try to hurry them on; there is such an incentive for Macbeth. It is this and not their reactions which send Macbeth and Banquo down separate paths in the play.
We have to distinguish here between being a traitor to Scotland and being a traitor to the king. Macbeth is certainly a traitor to his king by murdering him. But is he a traitor to Scotland? Perhaps in the sense that the atmosphere of unease and paranoia he creates with his own unease and paranoia does Scotland no good. However, look closely at Malcolm. Malcolm invades Scotland with an English army, and his closest confidant is Siward, an Englishman. His first act as king is to abolish the Scottish title of Thane and set up the English one of Earl. Culturally and politically he is betraying Scotland to the English.
The play is loosely based on the life of a real Scottish King, who died in about 1057, so the setting of the play is before or around that date Scholars believe that the play is most likely dated between 1603 and 1606. The Shakespearean play 'Macbeth' opened with a fight between Norway and Scotland. King Sweno [c. 1016-1035] wanted to invade Scotland, and King Duncan I [d. August 14, 1040] didn't want the Norwegian invasion to succeed. The Norwegian King had managed to attract discontented Scotsmen to his army of invading Norwegians. One such discontent was the powerful, wealthy Thane of Cawdor.
