Alvin Ailey's "Cry" is "A tribute to black women everywhere, especially our mothers" (quote Ailey)

It is a celebration of their beauty, dignity, strength, faith, and journey towards freedom.

The piece was dedicated to his mother Lulu Cooper in 1971.

As it is divided into three sections, there are three expressive intentions.

-section 1: slavery, hardships, struggle, labour, restraint

-section 2: helplessness, desperation, sadness, defiance, anger

-section 3: triumph, freedom, release, liberation
