I think that The Fantasticks is the longest running show in American history. It closed in 2002 after a 42-year run (more than twice as long as Cats). It is also credited with being the longest running musical in the world.
Actually the longest running play in the USA is "The Lost Colony" which has been running I believe since the late 1930's in Manteo NC...about the Sir Walter Raleigh colony that disappeared with only the engraved word "Croatan" on a tree remaining.

CATS is not a play, it is a musical. The first production of CATS opened in the West End in 1981 and a year later in Broadway. The London production ran for 21 years, ending in 2002 whilst the Broadway production ran for 18 years and closed in 2000.

Broadway shows are shown in New York, not Chicago. While Chicago is the name of a musical, there is no place to see a Broadway play in Chicago. However, the longest running play is A Chorus line which ran from 1975 until 1990.
