It is to tell the reader that life is so full of hurdles, mundanes and formidable that to simply face the everyday life is to exhibit courage. In the first stanza, the speaker shows a child's courage to take his first step, to learn a new skill and to withstand bullying by drinking 'their acid' and 'concealed it'.
In the second stanza, the speaker shows a solider in the Vietnam War showing courage. The speaker also shows in the last two lines that courage can be a form of love.
In the third stanza, the speaker hoes a person who had just simply suffered. The cause: unknown to the reader. The speaker show how someone who suffered can pick up ones feet and get back on track again.
In the fourth stanza, the speaker shows a person that is old. In the end, he died.
The speaker took us readers through a life showing us how this life was lived with courage in the small details of life.
I hope this helps! :D
