Ah, what a great question!

Painting was the mother of most visual arts (except sculpture of course). Before Photography existed, people painted to have lasting images of reality. Sometimes more religious, sometimes more natural. Because of photography, we don't have to do that anymore - but we still do because a painting depicts more than just the outward appearance of things. OF course, a good photographer can do that too, but he does it in a differnent way (by composition, lighting, subject matter etc). Painting is a more direct and free way of expression.

I guess you can say, painting has diverged into lots of media: photography, printing, installation, lightsculpting, video. But I feel painting is still the basic skill of all these things.
