Salsa music is typically 160 beats per minute up to about 230 beats per minute. There are a few salsa songs between 140 and 160 beats per minute. For beginner practice, you can use cha cha music which is slower than salsa music. Another trick for practice is to use software to slow down the music. Windows Media Player (windows) & VLC (free, cross-platform) do this. The commercial Amazing Slow Downer (US$50 or so) has better sound quality, though.
