As I am sure everyone in the world knows, Romeo and Juliet is a play about love. Of course that is not all, because plays are not essays and therefore do not have "topics" and "subjects" as if they were. Since it is a play it is not a discussion of the nature of true love, but rather a presentation of people who are deeply in love but who have some serious problems. Although some philosophical discussions (Plato's dialogues, for example) take the form of conversations, they are not dramatic and could not entertain anyone if put on stage. Plays, on the other hand, are not about abstract subjects, but are about individuals whose particular situations might invite us to reflect on those abstract subjects. So really, the subject of the play is Romeo and Juliet, and because of who they are, what they do and say and what happens to them in the end, it makes us think about what love is and how it works.
