What closed the theatres during Shakespeare's time, was The Bubonic Plague. But it is wrong to call it a "disaster" because that suggests that it was an event which happened once. Plague was a disease which had been troubling Europe for two hundred years by the time Shakespeare came along. There would be an outbreak in one town or city which would last a few months and then reoccur later. There was one outbreak at the time of Shakespeare's birth in Stratford, and a later one took the life of his younger sister Anne. When there was a plague outbreak in London the authorities closed the theatres to try to control the spread of the disease. This happened several times when Shakespeare was in the business. Usually the playing companies responded by going on tour in towns outside of London, but this was never as profitable as playing the London theatres. The plague closure of 1593-4 went on so long that it bankrupted a number of playing companies.

Life was harder for everyone back then, because there were no labour-saving devices. Maintaining a home was a major enterprise involving lots of skill and training and hard work. Incredibly, some women were able to keep a home and run a business at the same time. Contemporary visitors from the continent found that English women were given much more freedom and took on much more responsibility than their continental sisters. This must have made their life richer, but not necessarily easier.
Queen Elizabeth She was the only reason the theater wasn't totally shut down
At that time all the female parts were played by boys. (Although performances in the large outdoor theatres like the Globe used sunlight to light up the stage and so were held in the afternoon, performances in indoor theatres used artificial light and so could be and were held at night.)
As a result of writing "The Crucible," Arthur Miller faced significant backlash during the McCarthy era, as the play's themes of hysteria and accusation paralleled the anti-communist witch hunts of the time. He was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in 1956, where he refused to name others involved in leftist activities, leading to his conviction for contempt of Congress. The experience reinforced his commitment to social justice and the dangers of totalitarianism, ultimately solidifying his reputation as a major American playwright.
