The movie Shakespeare in Love is set in a very particular time setting. During the film, the great playwright Christopher Marlowe is killed in a bar brawl and Shakespeare is depressed, believing that he was responsible for inducing a man to kill Marlowe. This happened on May 30, 1593.

Of course the film is a fiction and not accurate in many ways. For a start, the playhouses were all closed due to plague in 1593, so no plays were put on at that time. And it seems quite clear that Shakespeare did not write for the Lord Admiral's Men at any time. Had he written Romeo and Juliet for Henslowe as the movie shows, it would have been an Admiral's Company play and would not have appeared in the first Folio. In fact we might never have heard of it at all, since a great many Admiral's scripts never made it to print.

Most scholars think that Romeo and Juliet was written later than 1593, probably more like 1595. And of course it is based on Arthur Brooke's poem and is in no way connected with the events of Shakespeare's life.
