Ghanaian dances are categorized in various ways. Dance origins are usually based upon the environmental location of the people (Tribe), the occupations of the people, the religious or ritual belief systems practiced, as well as other societal factors. The cultural dances have specific origins, some of which are difficult to trace due to them being passed from one generation to the next by former communal dancers, usually to their children. Dances are in two basic categories, Traditional and Contemporary. Further divisions are social/recreational, ritual, occupational, royal court dances, among others.
Ghana has a rich culture made up of the different ethnic groups that make Ghana a Society to admire! The traditional dances are accompanied by music created and played on traditional African instruments. The dances have meaning in addition to being exciting. The Master Drummer directs the steps of the dancers and dictates what steps come in order. Communication is extremely important between the musicians and dancres and the unity of mind, body, music and soul creates visual and auditory beauty for all to behold! May Ghana's past President, His Excellency Professor John Evans Atta Mills, Rest In Perfect Peace!
