In Shakespeare's 'The Tragedy of Macbeth,' he enjoys a very wealthy lifestyle, and is a high ranking enough to be in the line of succession for the King of Scotland. He and King Duncan were actually kinsmen. Once he had slain Duncan, and several members of his retinue, Duncan's sons fled out the country out of fear, leaving the throne open for Macbeth to seize.

Macbeth was most likely written in 1606, early in the reign of James I, who had been James VI of Scotland before he succeeded to the English throne in 1603. James was a patron of Shakespeare's acting company, and of all the plays Shakespeare wrote under James's reign, Macbeth most clearly reflects the playwright's close relationship with the sovereign. In focusing on Macbeth, a figure from Scottish history, Shakespeare paid homage to his king's Scottish lineage. Additionally, the witches' prophecy that Banquo will found a line of kings is a clear nod to James's family's claim to have descended from the historical Banquo. In a larger sense, the theme of bad versus good kingship, embodied by Macbeth and Duncan, respectively, would have resonated at the royal court, where James was busy developing his English version of the theory of divine right.

Very thick books have been written on small aspects of life in Elizabethan England, from games and toys which people used to amuse themselves to organized crime. They cannot all be discussed here. The end result is that although the details were different, the big picture was not much different from life nowadays. People were born, raised by their parents, went into a job, got married, had children, got diseases and died. They liked to eat and drink and have fun (except for that part of society who never seem to be happy when other people are having fun).

Major differences were that sanitation, especially in the city, was not good, so the cities smelled awful. Transportation was either on foot, by sailing ship, or by horse or horse-drawn vehicle. The pollution was therefore less and of a different kind. Medicine was clumsy and crude: many people died from diseases which the medical science of the day could not prevent: smallpox, syphilis, and plague. Communication was slower: unless you were talking to someone you could only send a letter which might take days to reach its destination. There was not much by way of home entertainment apart from reading books or playing games--it was more fun to get out to taverns, or to listen to sermons, watch animal bloodsports, executions, and of course plays.

Macbeth was probably not written and certainly not published in the Elizabethan Era, which ended in 1603. Macbeth was not published until twenty years later. Scholars believe that a story from Scottish history may have been chosen to flatter King James, who succeeded to the throne after Queen Elizabeth died, thus ending the Elizabethan Era.
