The earliest Broadway production of Romeo and Juliet opened January 28, 1754 at the New Theatre. Mr. Rigby played Romeo and Mrs. Hallam played Juliet. The play was only about 160 years old at the time.
The year 1850 saw Mrs James W Wallack, Jr. playing Romeo opposite Katharine Wemyss at the Bowery Theatre.
It has been staged on Broadway 33 times since, including performances by Lawrence Olivier and Vivien Leigh (1940), Ethel Barrymore (1922), Basil Rathbone (1934-5), Armand Assante (1977, as Tybalt), John Stride (1962), Maurice Evans (1936), Katherine Cornell (opposite both Rathbone and Evans), Olivia de Havilland (in her Broadway debut in 1951), and Claire Bloom and John Neville (1956-7). Quite a number in the early 20th century starred Julia Marlowe and E.H. Sothern.

Shakespeare wrote a broad variety of plays, some of which are famous and some are not. Although they were all designed to be performed according to the customs of Shakespeare's day and so are basically similar to the plays being written by the large number of playwrights who were at work at that time, they are different from each other in terms of mood, theme, diction and structure. When they were published as a group, they were divided into three groups, rather arbitrarily.
