There were no sets. The stage was the set for all scenes, indoor and out. Sometimes a piece of furniture was brought onto the stage, but the wall never changed (there was only one wall on the stage--the back wall).

Costumes consisted of the kind of thing contemporary people wore. Costumes for royalty and nobility consisted of cast-offs from the company's noble patron. Because clothes were a clear indicator of class, the company kept clothing which would suggest all classes of people. Occasionally there might be a nod to a costume that was not contemporary. A drawing of a performance of a Shakespeare play (the Peacham drawing, the only such drawing we have), suggests that the actors in a play set in ancient Rome might wear a sash to suggest ancient Romanness. Or not, as the case may be.

What did the sets costume and audience look or dress like in William Shakespeare?

When Shakespeare was an actor the actors always wore costumes which were contemporary. There were no sets because the stage had audience on three sides so they couldn't put up set pieces which would block the view. The audience dressed like ordinary late sixteenth or early seventeenth century people.

Describe the sets and costumes and actors and audience in Shakespeare's plays?

Shakespeare's plays have been played hundreds of thousands of times in the four hundred years since they were written, and with each production there are different actors, costumes and sets. Each performance has a different audience. The audience might be a dozen people sitting on the ground, some people standing in a market, people sitting in the plush seats of a western American opera house. The actors can be anything from schoolchildren to the most celebrated actors of the age, and everything in between. Almost all actors want to play Shakespeare. The set can be an elaborate reconstruction of ancient Egypt, as in Victorian sets of Antony and Cleopatra, or a bare stage, or anything in between. I have seen King Lear played on a hill outside in a park. Costumes are whatever the actors are going to wear. Claudius in a cardigan sweater? It's been done. Malcolm in a white turtleneck and blue blazer? Done. Kate Minola as a cowgirl? Done. Doll Tearsheet as a punk rocker? Ditto. Macbeth dressed as Genghis Khan with a crown like the Statue of Liberty? That was Orson Welles.
