The current usage of "geek" applies to someone with intellectual pursuits to the exclusion of more popular interests. Whereas a "nerd" is applied to those who are more socially withdrawn within such activities. Although it may seem like an oxymoron, one may be a "preppy geek" (i.e. interested in comics, sci-fi, the net but also adopting popular styles, also known as "geek chic"). A nerd is usually not well-adjusted to society; a nerd's friends are almost exclusively other nerds. Nerds are often smarter than geeks. A geek doesn't have to be smart. He can just like weird things. Most often nerds are the smart ones. So a "smart geek" is more likely a nerd, while a "stupid nerd" is probably not a nerd, but just a geek.

Example : a geek waits outside a movie theater for 4 hours waiting for the "Harry Potter" premiere; a nerd on the other hand goes to the premiere dressed as Harry Potter ----------- A geek is a person who carries pens and pencils in their pockets.

A nerd is a person who wears glasses and carries pens and pencils in their pockets.
