Fairy chimneys are a rock formation formed by erosion; see the famous ones in Turkey.
I am guessing -- since you've posted your question in "interior design" -- that this is not the information you seek.
Perhaps you are thinking of fairy lamps?
A simple definition of a fairy lamp is a glass lamp that uses a candle, not oil, (with a few exceptions) for illumination. When illuminated, in the more elaborate examples, the glass' satiny blush and brilliant colors are captivating. Since these used to be a pragmatic household need, there are many simpler versions.
In 1844, George Miller Clarke applied to the British Patent Office for a patent on a certain "improvement in night lights." This is considered the commercial "origin" of the fairy lamp. The Clarke family was prominent in marketing and crafting high quality examples of fairy lamps through the Victorian period.
Fairy lamps are growing in popularity as a collectible, especially for those interested in Victoriana and/or glass products.
Hope this helps.
