Type your answer here... Billy T James was a great lover of stand up comedy especially UK & American comedians. Some of his favourites were Bill Cosby, Eddie Pryor, Tommy Cooper, Sammy Davis Jr, and he also admired John Wayne among others.
Billy T James had a great memory for jokes and was known as a bit of a larrakin in his younger days. He would stay up for hours telling jokes to his mates at the then "United Maori Mission Hostel" in Auckland. One of his favourites was
"Why are fire engines red"? You would be too if you went around with your hose hanging out!"
He was also a great impersonator and with what seemed like little effort could impersonate anyone. While others would watch shows like C'mon (1968 NZ TV top of the pops musical show) he would actually learn all the music and lines while it was on and be able to sing and play along to them. Like all talented people, of course they have to love what they do, eat, love and breathe it, and Billy T certainly did this.

In my opinion, the poem is written from the view point of a dog. Billy could be the dog's master, or just a boy or shepard that spends all his time with the dog. They are clearly best friends. The author James Hogg was a shepard.
