The dance known as the "Mashed Potato" gained popularity in the early 1960s, particularly around 1962. It's an old dance and it's done on the floor "you squirm around like a worm!" No kidding! I believe Dan Ackroyd did it in "The Great Outdoors" at the end of the movie along with the "Mashed Potato" and "Watusi" among other styles of dance. Love to watch that man dance!

Dee Dee Sharp's dance, Mashed Potato and song, "Mashed Potato Time", was popular in 1962 and patterned after Chubby Checker's the Twist. Both men were from the Philadelphia area but were actively touring at the time. A variation of the Mashed Potato was the Monster Mash.
