Shakespeare's Sonnets appear to allude to three characters, other than the poet: (1) an aristocratic Fair Friend; (2) a Dark Mistress and (3) a Rival Poet.
Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets, 28 plays and two long poems (maybe 3, if you count the Turtle and the Phoenix)
Shakespeare is generally credited with 38 plays, 3 long poems, 154 sonnets, and one or two other random pieces of verse. But these totals can be different in the opinions of different scholars, who argue about some of the more dubious attributions. According to some people who think he was Christopher Marlowe or the Earl of Oxford, he wrote more after the time of his death.
The best candidate is his patron, Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton, to whom Shakespeare dedicated Venus & Adonis and Lucrece. In Sonnet 29 he appears to be begging for the vain Earl's help at a time of great personal difficulty, probably during 1592/3. The proposition is evidenced by the unique congruence between Wriothesley's history and the story discernible in Shakespeare's Sonnets. There is no direct evidence to give a tight dating to Sonnet 29. However, the biography pointed to within the entire sequence of Shakespeare's Sonnets suggests that this poem was composed around 1592/3. Read more on this in The Biography in Shakespeare's Sonnets at the link below.Interestingly, events at that time also suggest difficulties in Shakespeare's life. The economy was depressed and the London theatres were closed for much of the period - denying income to most people in show business. Robert Greene, a fellow author, died at a relatively young age in September 1592, largely due to poverty. He appears to have lambasted Shakespeare as an upstart imitator or plagiarist of his betters (in a publication, Groatsworth of Wit, appearing shortly after Greene's death).

I don't exactly know what status you're asking about, but the question that often comes up was if Shakespeare was a homosexual. There isn't really any conclusive evidence in that direction. He was married and had 3 or 4 children, but some of his sonnets seem to be addressed to a younger man. If this isn't what you wanted to know, just clarify your question and I will do my best to answer it.

Venus and Adonis, The Rape of Lucrece, The Phoenix and the Turtle, Sonnet XVIII. All the sonnets are known only by numbers so one could as easily say Sonnet 1, Sonnet 2, Sonnet 3 and Sonnet 4. Those are certainly four of Shakespeare's poems.

In this famous sonnet, Shakespeare declares that true love should overcome and outlast any obstacle. The opening two lines evoke words from the Christian church marriage service. Some commentators suggest that the poet is here referring to his own love for his addressee, which, he asserts, will not be dented or deflected by the misdeeds of the latter. However, given the wider context (of Shakespeare's Sonnets, read as a whole sequence), it appears that the poem is more an appeal to a former friend to forgive the lapses of the poet. "Don't", Shakespeare appears to be saying, "let the impediments of my behaviour sour our relationship".Read more on this and others of Shakespeare's Sonnets in Shakespeare: a Hidden Life Sung in a Hidden Song (see link below).

He wrote many poems as well as play and two long narrative scripts. Usually he wrote sonnets and it is believed he most enjoyed writing sonnets. He wrote 154 sonnets and called each of them Sonnet 1, Sonnet 2, Sonnet 3 etc. so it's easy to identify his poems. Most poems talk about a "dark lady" who was a secret love of his life. All of his poems relate to a specific topic but mostly about love and life.
Petrarch has written 366 poems and these poems can be found in the book "The Canzoniere".
