The first Miss American was crowned in Atlantic City, NJ in 1921; Margaret Gorman, the former Miss Washington D.C. African American women were not included in the contest until 1970. Vanessa Williams was the first African American woman to win the contest, in 1984. Photographs of Miss Williams that appeared in Penthouse magazine were revealed shortly after her ascent and she relinquished the crown.
