William Shakespeare's parents were John Shakespeare, who was an alderman, glover and a leather worker, and Mary Arden, who was the daughter of an affluent landowning farmer. John Shakespeare was born circa 1531 and died in 1601. Mary Arden was born circa 1537 and died in 1608.

Macbeth's [c. 1014-August 15, 1057] name was MacBethad mac Findlaich, which meant MacBeth the son of Findlaech. His father indeed was Findlaech, King of Moray. His mother was the daughter or granddaughter of King Malcolm II [d. November 25, 1034]. She has been identified as the younger daughter Donada or as the elder daughter Bethoc. In about 1000, Bethoc had married Crinan [c. 1045], the hereditary lay abbot of Dunkeld. Their son became King Duncan I [d. August 14, 1040] of Scotland.

Macbeth's mother may have been the daughter or granddaughter of King Malcolm II [d. November 25, 1034].
