The play Romeo and Juliet, (fully titled An Excellent conceited Tragedie of Romeo and Juliet in the first published version) was written by William Shakespeare some time between 1591 and 1595. Shakespeare based his play on English translations of ancient stories from Italy.

The play has been performed countless times in Theatres ever since.

There have been many screen adaptations of the play, notable ones are:

1936, directed by George Cukor, starring Norma Shearer and Leslie Howard, screenplay by Talbot Jennings.

1968, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, starring Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey, screenplay by Franco Brusati, Masolino D'Amico and Franco Zeffirelli.

1996, - directed by Baz Luhrman - film title Romeo + Juliet - starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, screenplay by Craig Pearce and Baz Luhrman
