The theme song, "Suicide is Painless", for both the Robert Altman 1970 movie MASH and the CBS television series M*A*S*H was written by Johnny Mandel with lyrics by Mike Altman, the director's son. Years later, Robert Altman commented that his son, who was 14 years old when he wrote the lyrics, had earned more in royalties than the $70,000 he got paid to direct the movie.
