Sen. Joe McCarthy led a zealous campaign to hunt out Communists in the United States during the 1940s and 1950s. Many writers, directors, and entertainers were unjustly blacklisted as Communist sympathizers, and as a result, they were denied work in Hollywood. Some faced fines, had their passports seized, or were jailed. Arthur Miller was drawing a parallel between the 1940s/50s and the Puritans who were falsely accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials.

A.To write of real social issues in the hopes of making society confront them.

On the surface it is a story of the Salem Witch Trials. What he was really addressing, though, was the McCarthyism of the 1950s. Senator Joseph McCarthy wasn't hunting witches but Communists, whom he said had permeated US culture and government.

Arthur Miller is offering social commentary, but in a very subtle manner.

The Crucible was an extended metaphor. It showed how McCarthyism was like the Salem witch hunt. Minnesota Senator, Joe McCarthy, convicted over 200 government emoployees of being communist. He had a list of names that was constantly growing. Names were added to the list if someone said someone else was a communist. No one ever saw the list of names. When McCarthy started to convict members of the US Military of being communist, the American Public began to view him as a bully. Of course, Arthur Miller was suspected of being a communist for writing this book.

Arthur Miller thought about how people can be accused of things without proof. He compared the Salem Witch Trials to himself and others being accused of being communist traitors.
