I am doing a study of this work and I have come to find that she wrote this for a sense of nostalgia, and just for the pure simple act of perfecting her craft that she adores.

It is a brilliant story in the fact that she can revert back to a sixteen year old girl writing an essay and muddle this lines between Oates subtle mockary of this age and the actual girl being psedo-intellectual.

If you read the story carefully you can find a few examples...the way to catch them is to think about how you felt at 16 and your writing style at that age. If you think that a line may seem a bit precocious, it is probably Oates's language as opposed to the girl.

For example: "It wasn't love he uncoiled in me with his hollowed-out eays and his courteous smile, that remnant of a prosperous past..." is Oates (a 16 year old girl my feel love but the reality of an expression that experiences is slim) "...and afterward we lay fat to face and he breathed everything into me" that is most likely the girl...a sentiment more age appropriate.

I hope this helps a little.
