The King had launched an unprovoked, unpopular, unjustified, unjust invasion of Macbeth's lands. And so the situation was righted with Duncan's death and Macbeth's immediate coronation. In fact, the Shakespearean play didn't agree with the historical records in many instances. But one of the historical accuracies was the close kinship between the two Kings. Duncan was the son of Bethoc, the eldest daughter of King Malcolm II [d. November 25, 1034], whom he succeeded as King of Scotland. Macbeth was the son of Donada, a younger daughter of the same King. He was succeeded by his stepson, King Lulach [d. March 27, 1058]. As with the case of his stepfather, Lulach was killed by Duncan's elder son, the subsequent King Malcolm III [d. November 13, 1093].
