Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible to explain to the US people about the tactics "if you're not with us your against us" of Senator McCarthy, who fostered a "witch hunt" against Americans who were communists. Americans were afraid of communism, which he represented as the witches in The Crucible.

Miller thought that the audience might see their own times, their own fears and dilemmas reflected in the themes of the crucible.
