He wrote song lyrics too; does that count?

Some people write poetry for fun or to express their thoughts and feelings. Shakespeare was one. Sonnets were a form he liked. He did not write very many short verses that were not sonnets.

Everything else he wrote, he wrote to make money. He was in an acting company; they needed plays; he could write them. They did not need recipes or sermons or epitaphs or anything apart from plays, so plays is what he wrote.
