The reason given was that they were trying to save their form of government, the republic. To their way of thinking, it was the only way to rid themselves of a dictator who was becoming king-like and disregarding the traditions of the republic. Also, because there were so many of them, (30 to 60, depending on your sources) there was bound to be some peersonal reasons.
