In Act 1 Scene 3 of the Shakespearean play, friends and fellow Generals Macbeth and Banquo met three witches. The witches hailed Macbeth as Thane of Glamis, which he already was; Thane of Cawdor, which he was unbeknownst to him; and King of Scotland, which he hadn't considered. Macbeth was shaken and then tempted by the predictions.
The witches then hailed Banquo as lesser and less lucky but at the same time greater and more fortunate than Macbeth. They predicted great fortune for the royal line that would descend from him even though he'd be uncrowned. Banquo joked about the insanity of believing supernatural beings that came and went. He later warned of the hidden agendas of such beings.
Macbeth takes them 100% seriously and completely believes them Banquo on the other hand takes it with a grain of salt and calmly waits for fate to work itself out.

They are both pretty amazed. They were so busy fighting the Norwegians at Forres that they had no idea that the Thane of Cawdor had treasonously supported the Norwegians in another battle at Fife. As far as they knew he was a "prosperous gentleman". They were also surprised to find that the three witches had spoken the truth when they hailed Macbeth as Thane of Cawdor. How the heck did they know? It made both of them wonder what they knew when they hailed him as a future king.

Macbeth is consumed by ambition and is already considering how to make the prophecies come true. Banquo, on the other hand, is more skeptical and cautious, questioning the motives of the witches and their prophecies. Banquo believes that the witches may be trying to deceive them with half-truths.

Not well. He says to the murderer, "Then comes my fit again . . . but now I am cabin'd, cribb'd, confined, bound in to saucy doubts and fears." He is afraid that Fleance will overthow him because of the witches' prophecy that Banquo will "get kings". He doesn't seem to remember that when it is Malcolm who is marching on him, not Fleance.
