Many operas were written before the invention of microphones, amplifiers, and speakers, so the singers need to be loud so the words can be heard.

What is the script from an opera?

The script from an opera is called "libretto". An opera is the most complete of all musical works in my modest opinion, once require not only the orchestra's performance and the singers and their prepared voices but also their interpretation of the "libretto". So the singers performs like actors in a play which is very often a dramatic history. Listen to Madame Butterfly for example.

How has the opera house changed over time?

The evolution of the opera house covers a few hundred years so I would suggest referring to a good history of opera that contains illustrations etc of the various houses over this period. However the one major part of this evolution is probably the acoustic enhancement of the opera house by wiring for sound with loudspeakers. This could mean larger houses and using singers with less vocal projection and carrying power - that could be looked upon as good or bad.

How much does an opera company pay a lead opera singer?

Many will say 'not enough'! It is the rare musician who is compensated for the years of study and practice required to become an opera singer. Your answer depends on talent, skill, luck and reputation. Longer-term, better known opera singers earn more than do newly minted voices. There may be union scale wages for members of the opera chorus, but named singers are paid by contract amounts -- in multiple tens of thousands.

What opera company is primarily a training company for opera singers?

There are a few opera companies which could be considered training grounds for opera singers. Opera America (a national organization of Opera companies and singers) classifies the companies by budget and usually the companies with the smallest budgets tend to hire very young singers, making them automatically "training grounds". Other companies like Dayton Opera pride themselves on finding young talent and giving them a chance. Of course there are various programs where a young singer goes to gain experience. The Chautauqua Institute performs an opera each year with young singers. The Aspen Festival is very famous as well. Glimmerglass Opera Company offers a very interesting program for young singers. Wolf Trap Opera and Central City Opera also tend to use a lot of young talent. For young singers of a certain quality there are also young artist programs. Typically a member of a young artist program maybe asked to sing in the chorus for the company's season and sing a few smaller roles that the young singer is well suited to. In some cases they may even be called upon to act as an understudy for a principal role. Some of the most important programs are: -The Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. The singers cover roles and perform small roles as well as receiving instruction in language, acting and voice from top teachers. The singer also receives funds to live on from the Metropolitan Opera. The singer must win the Metropolitan Operas National Auditions (a competition) or be selected by the company to be a part of the program. -The Houston Grand Opera Studio. The singers cover roles and perform small roles as well as receiving instruction in language, acting and voice from top teachers. The singer also receives funds to live on from the Houston Grand Opera. The HGO Studio also performs a small scale series of opera aside from the main stage. The singer must win the Houston Grand Opera National Auditions (a competition) or be selected by the company to be a part of the program. -The Washington National Opera's Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program. The singers cover roles and perform small roles as well as receiving instruction in language, acting and voice from top teachers. The singer also receives funds to live on from the Washington National Opera. The HGO Studio also performs a small scale series of opera aside from the main stage. The singer must be selected by Placdio Domingo to enter to program. -San Francisco Opera's Merola Program. In this 11 week program singers perform often and taken on interesting roles. The learn all aspects needed to refine the career with offerings such as acting, language, stage movement, makeup and stage fighting.Housing and a stipend for living on is provided. The students perform in two fully staged operas during the summer as well as a free concert and a famous performance at the War Memorial Opera House. Many of Merola's alumni are very successful. -Santa Fe Opera Young Artist Program. Over the summer season singers got to work on a stage with the best singers in the world..Housing and a stipend for living on is provided. -Many of the other top American Houses have a young artist program as well, but not so developed as the major ones (Chicago, Cincinnati, Portland and Seattle). Training grounds for opera singers could also be found in the countless schools of music around America. While many of these schools really don't put on a great show, so how could the students learn to really be great performers, some of the top schools do very high quality work. Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music is just about the best. Curtis Institute of Music, the Julliard School and the Eastman School of Music are also excellent. These schools are the best place for singers to train because they offer the most high level of musical instruction and allow singers to perform.

Why are opera singers so fat?

There is no relationship between singing ability and weight. In fact, many opera singers are quite thin. Some may be fat because they are musically inclined, and not interested in athletics, or they are orally oriented and therefore eat a lot.

Was pavarotti slightly blind?

There is no evidence supporting the fact that Pavarotti was slightly blind. His friend and fellow opera singer Andrea Bocelli is completely blind, so those claims may be confusing the two singers.

You want to be a singer when you grow up but you cant singWhat do you do?

To become good at something you have to study it. So in your case the best thing to do would be for you take lessons in music and get voice training. The truth is that most of the singers that are popular today are mediocre singers at best. Never the less singing to them is a business and they must have the drive and the knowledge to market them selves. So The thing to do is Learn Music, Learn to sing, learn about marketing yourself and work at it because you cant count on luck to get you where you want to be.
