He is a bastard in the sense that his parents were unmarried. He shares a father with Don Pedro but they have different mothers, and Don Pedro's is the woman who was married to their father. Although it is not explored in the play, his bastardy may be a cause of his resentment and desire to be a troublemaker. Certainly this is the case with Edmund, Gloucester's bastard son in King Lear.

Although both of these illegitimate sons are portrayed as bad characters, Falconbridge, the bastard in King John, is in fact a good guy.
