Probably because there's something wrong with the TV set. Sony's have a lot of self-protect circuitry to keep it from developing further damage to the other components if something fails internally.
This may sound silly, but check to make sure it's plugged into a live socket. As a TV repairman, you can't believe how many `dead sets' were unplugged. Usually, the owners have pets or children that somehow manage to unplug the set.
