The active ingredients in Temaril-P are trimeprazine (5mg) and prednisolone (2mg). Trimeprazine is also known as alimemazine. Trimeprazine is marketed in Canada under the name Panectyl. Trimeprazine was used in humans until 1999 when Allergan pulled it from the human market. There were a far greater number of non or less-sedating antihistamines available by 1999 for pruritis. Trimeprazine was originally developed for human use but is only available in veterinary formulations now. Other than drowsiness, trimeprazine should have few side-effects if used occasionally; however, prednisolone has many side-effects even in low dosages so that would be the primary concern. One shouldn't take drugs labeled for veterinary use only, but occasional use of Temaril-P shouldn't pose a danger to humans. The dose is the same for humans and dogs - 5mg starting.
